Podcast Episode 38: How To Go From 50 to 150 Students With Small Dojo Big Profits!

How to go from 50 to 150 students in your martial art school

Eighteen months ago, Bill Jones was struggling to make ends meet in his Brazilian jiu-jitsu school with 45 students, all while working a full-time day job and raising a family.

Then he stumbled across one of Mike’s books on Amazon, and took the plunge on the rest of the Small Dojo Big Profits training materials.

And today? Bill is running a thriving dojo with 150 students… he’s been able to quit his day job… and he says he’s living the dream, teaching full-time and doing what he loves.

Listen in as Bill shares:

  • How he struggled before finding Mike’s materials,
  • The embarrassing “light bulb moment” he had while trying to convince a successful school owner to rent him space,
  • And how implementing the Small Dojo Big Profits systems in his school completely transformed his business.

And, in The Tip of the Week, Mike explains how to avoid making a critical mistake in marketing your dojo.

Podcast Excerpt

Hello everyone out there in the Martial Arts Business Nation and the Small Dojo Big Profits tribe. This is Mike Massie, back at you with another edition of the Martial Arts Business Podcast. The interview I have for you today on the podcast went long so I’m going to be brief with this introduction. Let me tell you about the person I have on the podcast today. His name is Bill Jones. He’s a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu under Pedro Sauer. Long time martial artist. He’s actually been practicing martial arts for about thirty years. He’s been involved in Jiu-jitsu for about the last twelve years. Owns his own school. He’s had his own school since 2012.

He has been a client of mine, a coaching client, for about eighteen months and he’s experienced some pretty dramatic growth during that time. He’s gone from having a great job, a really good job, making close to six figures to making enough in his school to where he could quit that job. He’s not making as much as he was in his day job yet in his martial arts school because he made some mistakes early on before he met me but as he’ll explain in the interview, he is where he wants to be right now. He’s very happy being there. It’s all due to applying some very simple, very powerful, martial arts business strategies in his school and learning new things and taking action on those things.

I think you’re going to enjoy this interview. It’s a really good interview. I enjoyed doing it simply because I enjoy talking to my clients and especially when it’s someone that has come to me at some point and said, “Hey, I’ve got this dream of running a martial arts school full time and teaching full time. Can you help me?” Then after I’ve gotten to see them grow in their martial arts school and in their business to the point where they can realize that dream, it’s a good thing. I really think you’re going to enjoy this interview.

Also, in The Tip of the Week later on in the show after the interview is over, I’m going to talk a little bit about advertising and advertising mistakes so I hope you’ll stick around for that. All right. Enough of that. We’re going to have a quick message. This is my podcast and I do support this podcast myself through selling my own resources and materials so you’re going to hear a brief commercial message from me and then we’re going to get right into that podcast interview, so stick around.

Mike you are so right, and this article is on point,as a African American Martial Artist I can tell you that most of us did not study these things in the beginning when we first started our schools ,alot of this was over our heads, now realizing if you are doing this as a business you have to treat it as a business and you need to do the things you are saying if we want to be sucessful, demographics is very important because if you are in a area where people cannot afford your service you will just shoot yourself in the foot

Travis, I struggled early on in my business because I was never around successful businessmen and businesswomen growing up, and I was never taught the principles of running a successful business. However, it just took getting a good mentor who was willing to spend time with me, and also being teachable and coachable to get over that hump. Hope your business is doing well.
